If you’ve heard the saying “the money’s in the list”, here’s a teaser of just how much: Morning Brew—a newsletter for business news and updates—makes north of $20 million in revenue year after year. The Hustle, a tech mixed business newsletter, makes for more $2 million annually.

And their mega success rests on 1 on-the-nose fact:

People trust individuals more than brands.

Which means brands will pay a premium to advertise on your emails that subscribers want to read.

Creating a newsletter follows the simple principles of: 

(1) Creating regular content for your newsletter
(2) Driving people to subscribe
(3) Monetizing your list via ads/sponsors/affiliate links
(4) Driving more people to subscribe.

But because there’s a world of a difference between newsletters that succeed and efforts that quickly sink, here’s how not get sunk:

1/ Have no less than good content i.e. Anything that an audience finds highly interesting (often found in ultra niches), which you will give out in your newsletter entirely for free.

2/ Drive subscribers A large list = more clicks = more ad/affiliate revenue = bigger and better (paying) sponsors. Where to drive precious subscribers from? A website with decent traffic. Social media. A personal brand. Yours or someone else’s.

3/ Monetize it, strategically Whether you choose to upsell a paid subscription, get paid from featuring ads, sponsors, and affiliate links, or sell your own stuff, sear this principle in your mind: Only feature brands/offers that align with your content and audience (unless you want to break your list’s trust fast).

And to make monetizing your newsletter as easy as humanly can be: use an email platform that’s specifically made to monetize newsletters (i.e. beehiiv - this is the platform I use for these emails).
