🐕 For Fast Cash

Start a local, dog-walking service.

If you’re good with dogs, this side hustle is great for quick cash because it requires minimal start-up costs—and is easy as hell to spot potential customers.

Before starting: get business cards made with the very basics: your name, your service (Dog Walker in {your local area’s name}), an address, your mobile number, and email. 

And a highly recommended: start an Instagram page with a service-focused name so you can start uploading pictures of happy dogs on walks for instant credibility.

How to start offline: It’s as simple as spotting an owner in your area walking their dog and then going up to them for a chat.

Interact well with the dog, ask if it gets enough walks in, and then naturally segway to saying you’re a local dog walker and would be more than happy to give more outdoor time/fresh air to their dog (cue: give them your business card). 

Before starting online: if you haven’t had much luck with sealing the deal with locals & you’re in an urban area, you can get on platforms like ‘Wag!’, ‘Rover’, and ‘TimetoPet’ where you’ll find dog-walking gigs in the area.

🖥️ For working at home/if disabled

Become a Virtual Assistant from home. 

It might not be the most fulfilling of jobs, but being a personal assistant for things like answering customer emails, scheduling appointments, and data entry pays decently and can be done from a laptop in bed. 

Before starting: set up your profiles on popular platforms like Upwork and TaskRabbit—but ideally, not both at the same time.

Either way, take the time to write a Profile Overview that shows how your experience/skills can be of help to clients + the fact that you’re a hard working/fast learning ex-veteran/veteran (or pay a copywriter on Fiverr to write one for you).

How to start on Upwork: once your profile is set up, you can immediately go to the ‘Find Work’ section and search ‘virtual assistant jobs’. 

Narrow down on your specialty (if you have one) and start applying for jobs (applying will cost you ‘connects’ of around $2 per job application, but once you land a gig, this will easily make up for that cost). 

Getting your first job as Virtual Assistant will take time, but it’s a pure numbers game, so keep applying. And once you’ve landed your 1st gig: do a stellar job and ace the customer service stuff—so you can get a review that makes getting your next job so much easier.

👨‍🏫 For building side income

Using your expertise to become a tutor/instructor. 

This newsletter’s audience of veterans has a wildly diverse set of skills—either from what you’ve been specializing in for decades or you’re certified in or have a knack for. And that expertise is something that many would pay good money for.

The gist of it: whether you have years of experience/expertise in IT, purchasing, aviation, welding, or oil and gas, you’ll be able to shorten the learning curve for those trying to learn the same thing you did.

Your offer will be to help people in your area of expertise get past roadblocks, find clarity, and progress in the field. Which is why the more defined you can be about your skills’ niche, the more compelling you will be to those who are trying to learn the same thing/ 

How to get started: LinkedIn will be your best friend here. Set up your profile properly (create an ‘About’ section where you explain your offer for tutoring/instruction), then create a Service Page so people can see clearly how you can help them.

But this isn’t a side hustle that will make you money fast. It takes time to find a first client (likely it’ll take some networking) and then building recommendations and referrals from that. 

But as a job that will eventually pay you very well for your time and that you can do entirely online: it would be an ideal supplement to any income.
